STEM Lessons Now at Miracle Skate!

We’re excited, too! Whether you’re a teacher looking for a fun, engaging field trip or a parent searching for a way to teach your children via practical application, this is for you!

STEM 1What is STEM.?

The STEM program is a unique, engaging way that gets kids excited about learning. When kids come for a STEM field trip they learn that the concepts of science, technology, engineering and math are found in everyday experiences -even favorites such as roller skating!

We now have a professional STEM educator who will be teaching visiting students about how STEM principles are found in everyday life. On of our favorite parts about STEM is that each lesson focuses on hands on activities to not just teach the concepts, but demonstrate them on a level they understand. We have customized lessons that are based on teacher’s needs to directly relate back to the classroom. After their 1 hour STEM lesson, the students get to roll around the rink for physical fitness and to experience what they just learned. Lunch is available for an additional cost upon request.

The lessons are designed to show students that STEM is fun, excited and a new favorite way to learn.

How many lessons are there?

There are 5 lessons to choose from:STEM

  1. The Science of Roller Skating
  2. Motion & Rink Design
  3. Music, Math & Roller Skating
  4. Super Sound! Acoustics & Rink Design
  5. Engineering Magic and Lighting

How to set up a STEM field trip:

Why Sign Up for Kids Skate Free?

There used to be a time when parents flashed the flood lights or rang a school bell to get their kids to go inside for dinner, now you have to disconnect the wifi, “lose the remotes” and refuse to reheat dinner for them. With all the technology around us, it’s hard to get them active and exercising these days. Here at Miracle Skate, we believe exercise should be fun. We want to encourage kids to unplug and unwind with friends and family here at the rink.

Miracle Skate is proud to say that we are part of a program called Kids Skate Free. This program is designed to promote kids to be active and exercise in a way that excites them by offering free passes to participating skating rinks! Once you sign up, each child (up to four per family) will receive two passes to use each week here at Miracle Skate. This means that if they own their own KidsSkateFree.comskates, their skating day is totally free! But don’t worry if you don’t have your own skates, we have both quads and inline (rollerblades) available to rent during your time with us. This program is offered to kids 12 and under, but don’t let that stop you from having a family fun outing! Not sure what days they can be use? We make it simple to find out -simply check out our hours and location page.

Roller skating is a fun way to get exercise, burn calories, and improve balance and flexibility. Its easy and fun to learn at every age. We hope to see you and your family here at Miracle Skate in Madera, CA soon, so sign up for your free skate passes today!

Rollerskating: Keeping Your Heart Happy in More Ways Than One

We’ve all heard that rollerskating has it’s health benefits, but do you REALLY know just how good those laps around the rink are for you? Skating has fantastic aerobic and cardiovascular benefits that’s not known to many. Your favorite childhood activity could be your heart and joints’ saving grace.

Benefits of Skating

According to Dr. Carl Foster, associate professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, skating as a form of exercise is as beneficial as running or cycling. The best part about it? With skating there’s no padding shorts needed for cycling.

• Roller skating is equal to jogging in terms of health benefits and calorie consumption, strength happy heartdevelopment, and reduction of body fat.

• Did you know? Roller skating is recognized AND recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) as an aerobic fitness sport.

• A mere hour of brisk roller skating burns 330 calories for a roughly 140-pound person. If that same person were to roller skate vigorously, he/she will burn up to 590 calories in a one hour!

• Skating at 6 mph burns 350 calories while skating at 10 mph burns 600.

• Skating at a steady, comfortable rate for a period of 30 minutes expends 285 calories and produces a heart rate of ~148 beats per minute.

• A study conducted at the University of Massachusetts determined in-line skating causes less than 50 percent of the impact shock to joints compared to running.

•Want to get the all the benefits aerobics can offer? Roller skate one day, bicycle another, and swim or run on another.

Roller Skating: Time Tested, Celebrity Approved

Roller skating is a time-tested sport. Everyone loves to roller skate; even celebrities like Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian go skating!

Recently a number of celebrities took a break from LA nightlife to attend a party at a roller rink in Los Angeles. Lauren Conrad, Lo Bosworth, Stephanie Pratt and Kim Kardashian were there. They all got into the spirit, discoing on their skates!

Bring Your Friendscute skates

If your friends tell you that roller skating is ‘lame’, have them check out the celebs on wheels…or maybe pop in a movie or two to show everybody skates, and has fun doing it, too!

DVDs to Rent

Roll Bounce: In 2005, this movie showed us a number of celebrities on skates. Rapper Bow Wow played the lead, a guy in the 70s who rules the local rink with his friends.

Rollerball: In 2002, LL Cool J, Chris Klein and Rebecca Romijn play roller skating pros, showing off some real skills on their skates.

Whip It: The 2009 movie Whip It is all about roller derby; Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore tear up the rink in this one!

In real life, a number of celebs can be found regularly at the rink. Cher has been a roller skating devotee for years, and her legs look great!

Jessica Simpson skates too, and so does Beyonce! In fact, Beyoncé actually held her 21st birthday party at a skating center in Atlanta. And both Janet Jackson and Kim Bassinger have also hosted birthday bashes while skating the night away.
